The Romans celebrated Mother's Day in a similar way to today, although with some differences. The celebration was known as “Matronalia” and was held on March 1 in honor of Juno, the queen of the gods and protector of women and marriage. During the Matronalia, Roman women received gifts from their husbands and families, as a sign of respect and gratitude for their role in the family and society. Women participated in banquets and religious ceremonies to honor Juno and ask for her blessing for fertility and prosperity. It was also a time for women to celebrate female solidarity and community spirit. In addition to worshiping female deities, they celebrated “Florealia” during the month of flowers, May, a symbol of rebirth and prosperity.
